  17. <p>     The yakuza is Japan's version of the Mafia, a shadowy mob
  18. brotherhood that often operates behind a shield of what appears
  19. to be legitimate business fronts. According to Japanese press
  20. reports, one such business is West Tsusho, a Tokyo-based real
  21. estate firm that has bought into two American companies with the
  22. help of an unusually well-placed U.S. middleman: Prescott Bush
  23. Jr., 68, the President's elder brother.

  25. <p>     Japanese police have been investigating West Tsusho, which
  26. press reports say is an arm of a company controlled by Susumu
  27. Ishii, onetime head of Japan's second largest crime syndicate.
  28. Documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission show
  29. that Bush helped West Tsusho invest heavily in two American
  30. firms: Quantum Access, a Houston-based software company, and
  31. Asset Management International Financing & Settlement, a New
  32. York City-based firm.
  33. </p>
  34. <p>     In return for his services in the Asset Management deal,
  35. Bush reportedly received a finder's fee of $250,000 as well as
  36. the promise of $250,000 a year for three years in consulting
  37. fees. As West Tsusho's criminal connections only recently came
  38. to light, Bush is unlikely to have known he was fronting for
  39. the mob.
